Genealogy Workshops In-Person

Genealogy Workshops on May 1

The Brainerd Public Library will be holding Genealogy Workshops on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.  The genealogy workshops will include three different classes scheduled at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:30pm.  Participants can register for as many of the free classes as they want to attend by calling the library at 218-829-5574.  All of the classes will be taught by genealogist Rick Crume. The classes will include:

  • 11:00am-12:00pm - A Guide to FamilySearch and Ancestry: A free site, FamilySearch.org has a large, growing collection of records, books, photos and family trees. Available at the Brainerd Public Library and other Kitchigami Regional Library branch locations, Ancestry Library Edition gives you free access to billions of census records, vital records, directories, photos and more. Rick will share search strategies and power user tips for both websites.
  • 1:00-2:00pm - Tree-Keeping: If you’re very serious about genealogy, you need tools to help you record names, dates, places, relationships and sources, not to mention family stories and photographs. You’ll also want to take advantage of huge collections of online records and family trees and share your family history online. Genealogy software, an online tree or a combination of the two can help you accomplish those tasks. Rick will compare the most popular options, including RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker software, Ancestry Member Trees and the FamilySearch Family Tree. He’ll also describe how you can synchronize your family trees on your computer, mobile devices and online family trees.
  • 2:30-3:30pm - Foreign Newspapers Online: Newspapers from around the world, some dating back to the eighteenth century, are online. Most collections offer full-text searching and many are free. In this session you’ll learn how to use online foreign newspapers to discover references to immigrant ancestors before they left their homelands or stories about American relatives traveling abroad, working overseas, serving in the military or doing missionary work.

A contributing editor for Family Tree Magazine, Rick Crume has also written for Family Chronicle, Internet Genealogy, Discovering Family History, the National Genealogical Society’s NewsMagazine and the Minnesota Genealogist, as well as genealogical journals in Canada and Great Britain. He is the author of “Plugging Into Your Past: How to Find Real Family History Records Online.” He specializes in online research, genealogy software and British genealogy.

This free Legacy Program sponsored by your library is funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage.
